The Night the City Turned Purple 💜

Sojourner’s Be the Light 50th Anniversary Gala

Sojourner’s Be the Light 50th Anniversary Gala was a beautiful celebration of the organization’s journey, impact, and unwavering commitment to serving survivors of domestic violence. For five decades, Sojourner has stood as a pillar of peace in Milwaukee and on this special night, the city turned purple in its honor.

Held at the Baird Center, stunning centerpieces, curated auction items, and warm greetings set the tone for a night of solidarity.

As our CEO Carmen Pitre shared during her remarks, the vision for Sojourner in the next 50 years is bold: to continue transforming lives and ensure thousands more survivors have access to the resources they need to heal and build lives free from violence.

Green Bay Packers legend Donald Driver then joined Carmen on stage, sharing their personal experiences growing up around domestic violence, offering powerful reflections on the importance of having a haven. Their stories reminded us why Sojourner’s work is so essential, and it is evident in their commitment to advocating for others.

One of the most moving moments of the evening came when Laurel, a survivor and member of Sojourner’s VOICES Committee, spoke. Laurel bravely shared her journey from recognizing the signs of abuse to walking through the doors of Sojourner for the first time. Her story is a powerful reminder that healing is possible, and that by speaking out, survivors can inspire others to take that first step toward safety.

Beyond the emotional stories, the generosity in the room was also undeniable.

Guests enjoyed a vibrant auction featuring unforgettable getaways, exclusive outings, and one-of-a-kind items. But the giving didn’t stop there! Even after the auction ended, attendees raised their paddles to donate directly to Sojourner’s critical services from shelter and legal advocacy to trauma-informed care. In those moments, it wasn’t about the items, it was about being the change in someone else’s life.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, Be the Light surpassed our fundraising goal and raised an astounding $687,000!

Reaching 50 years is a remarkable milestone, and Sojourner is deeply grateful to our gala Co-Chairs: Carlene & Buddy Julius, Connie & Omar Shaikh, Nicole & Brian Lammi, and our Honorary Co-Chair Donald Driver for championing this cause.

As the evening came to a close, guests made their way to the Afterglow Celebration, where they enjoyed treats from the dessert bar, and danced to the upbeat music curated by DJ Shawna. It was a night to remember, and a celebration of everything Sojourner stands for.

As we look ahead, one thing is clear: Sojourner will continue opening its doors to all who need them. We are committed to ensuring that no one is left in the dark.

Be the Light 2026 will be held Thursday, June 11 at Discovery World. We hope to see you there!
