Hope Lives Here: Join us for a deeper look at how we measure hope.

Measuring hope is integral to supporting families impacted by domestic violence. Join us for a conversation with Sojourner’s President and CEO Carmen Pitre and Director of Outcomes and Evaluation Dr. Erin Schubert and Dr. Chan Hellman as we discuss how we measure hope and how Sojourner utilizes this unique tool to support individuals, children and families in our community.

About the speakers

Chan Hellman, PhD
Hope Research Center Director
University of Oklahoma Professor

Chan is a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma and Director of The Hope Research Center. He has written more than 150 scientific publications and has presented at numerous national and international conferences worldwide. Chan also presented his work on hope with TEDx in May of 2021.

Chan’s research is focused on hope as a psychological strength helping children and adults overcome trauma and adversity. This research informed the development of the “Hope Centered and Trauma Informed” training program. Chan is the co-author of the award-winning book “Hope Rising: How the Science of Hope Can Change Your Life” with his co-author Casey Gwinn published by Morgan James. As a result of this work, Chan was one of five invited workshops for Jane Goodall’s Global Hope Summit that will occur in November, 2021.

Carmen Pitre
Sojourner President & CEO

Carmen Pitre is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sojourner, Wisconsin’s largest provider for families dealing with domestic violence. Under Pitre’s leadership, Sojourner provides crisis housing, system advocacy and individual support to thousands of women, children and families.

Carmen draws on decades of work and personal experience to improve the way the community supports families impacted by domestic violence. She believes – and data proves – a holistic approach of co-locating services and coordinating resources is effective, efficient and yields better outcomes for families. In 2016, Carmen rallied Milwaukee leaders to create the Sojourner Family Peace Center so people impacted by domestic violence could access an array of service, from crisis response to counseling and professional training, under one roof.

Erin Schubert, PhD
Sojourner Director of Outcomes and Evaluation

Dr. Erin Schubert is the Director of Outcomes & Evaluation at Sojourner Family Peace Center in charge of internal research and evaluation efforts to ensure programming achieves intended outcomes and promote data driven decision making throughout the organization. This unique position allows her to apply her skillset conducting rigorous social science research and evaluation in a context that is immediately applicable to practice.

Dr. Schubert received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota. She has conducted research on resilience among families facing adversity in a variety of contexts including homelessness, poverty, and parental incarceration. She received intensive training from world experts in sophisticated analysis of social science data through Texas Tech University’s Stats Camp, specifically attending training courses on structural equation modeling as well as advanced techniques for examining mediation and moderation. Dr. Schubert is passionate about using science, research, and data to positively impact social service work ultimately improving the lives of those we serve.
